The water was not cold — it was warm as a summer afternoon, and so clear I could see a hundred meters in every direction. Bioluminescent jellyfish drifted past in slow procession, each one a lantern trailing ribbons of violet and cyan light. Coral towers rose from the seafloor like cathedral spires, colonized by fish painted in every colour a mind could conjure. A manta ray the size of a house glided silently overhead, its shadow momentarily dimming the light show. At the deepest point I found a cavern whose walls pulsed with soft rose light. Inside, an ancient shipwreck had been swallowed by anemones and sea fans until it looked more like sculpture than wreckage. I drifted through its hull, counting the fish that called it home, in no hurry to return to the surface."
